In a study research, it was discovered that LGBT [lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender] youths commit suicide more than heterosexual youths. One question that perturbed my mind was Why are LGBT students committing suicide more than non-LGBT students? What factors are responsible for the massive suicide? Lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender and heterosexual people are all members of a community, however, the society finds it difficult to accept them as members of the society instead they are being discriminated against. The Living Pain Essay Example For Students

The Living Pain Essay The Living PainFor centuries, death was measured by a physician feeling for a pulse and putting a mirror under the patients mouth. If there were no signs of life-no pulse, no breath, death was certified. In the last few decades, however, a physicians duty has not been so simple. More intricate scientific tests may be called for; and the law defining the point at which life ends is not so easy to formulate. Many steps must be taken to determine death. At the same time, many steps must occur so the person can have the right to say that they do not want to be respired. In passive or negative euthanasia the person dies naturally of the disease process; in active euthanasia the person is killed. Active euthanasia is often confused with allowing the terminally ill person to die naturally of the disease. Allowing an individual to die means foregoing or stopping medical treatments intended to prolong life. For example, a terminally ill person on a respirator (breathing machine) in an intensive care ward may request that the machine be turned off and that they be allowed to die. The discontinuation of the life support technology when any realistic hope for recovery has completely vanished is a legal, ethical, and appropriate act also known as passive euthanasia.Through the research of this paper, I have looked at both sides of the argument. I can say that I agree with the side of passive euthanasia. One advocate of the legalization of active or positive euthanasia has said that it matters very much indeed if but one person who would have decided for a quick death is forced to undergo a protracted one. It also matters, of course, if but one person who would have decided to live longer is pressured into accepting a quick death (McKenzie 491). Hein 2For some people, any appeal to utility in considering the desirability of legalizing euthanasia will seem cruel and inappropriate. If passive euthanasia becomes legally and morally accepted, it is inevitable that strong pressures will be put on many patients who do not want to die, but who feel they should not live on, because to do so when there looms the legal alternative of euthanasia is to do a selfish or a cowardly act (McKenzie 479). An important attempt to incorporate euthanasia into law took place in England in 1931. Dr. Killick Millard, health officer for the city of Leicester, gave his presidential address before the Society of Officers of Health. In a subsequent article in Fortnightly Review, he presented his specific proposals in a draft bill entitled The Voluntary Euthanasia Legalization Bill. It included the following provisions: 1. An application for a euthanasia permit may be filed by a dying person stating that they have been informed by two medical practitioners that they are suffering from a fatal and incurable disease, and that the process of death is likely to be protracted and painful. 2. The application must be attested by a magistrate and accompanied by two medical certificates. 3. The application and certificates must be examined by the patient and relativesinterviewed by a euthanasia referee. 4. A court will then review the application, certificates, the testimony of the reefer and any other representatives of the patient. It will then issue a permit to receive euthanasia to the applicant and a permit to administer euthanasia to the medical practitioner (or euthanizer). 5. The permit would be valid for a specified period, within which the patient would determine if and when they wished to use it. (Humphry 13)Hein 3Are these the kind of pressures we want to inflict on any person, let alone a very sick person? Are these the kind of pressures we want to impose on any family, let alone an emotionally shattered family? And if so, why not also proper considerations for the crippled, the paralyzed, the quadruple amputee, the iron-lung occupant and their families? The withholding of grand-style heroic surgery from a ninety-nine year old hopelessly dying patient who begs to be left alone is not euthanasia even if surgery could prolong the life several more weeks. The injection of a massive dose of morphine to this same patient, producing death, would be considered euthanasia. The difference is that of an act of commission as opposed to an act of omission. Euthanasia induces death by commission. It does not allow nature to take its course. The act itself is t he same cause of death. Opening an-inground swimming p EssayThe reluctance of medical practitioners to provide individuals with the means to their own death is often speciously justified by reference to the sanctity with which doctors are expected to regard all human life. The Hippocratic Oath is sometimes invoked: I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked; or the Declaration of Geneva: I will maintain the utmost respect for human life. More pragmatically, it may be argued that doctors must work by a single, overriding principle to improve health and prolong life and that it would place them in difficult positions if they had to compromise this aim. This deference rings somewhat hollow, however, in the face of what actually happens in practice. For we find that doctors do make termination decisions as a matter of choice, and without the concent of their victims. I am not speaking here only of the killing of foetuses. Doctors apply non-voluntary euthanasia to the elderly, to comatose patients and to handicapped babies, among others. What sort of profession is it which refuses to do what its clients want, and kills them without their concent?Hein 6Now many of the people who advocate this form of euthanasia are apparently agreed that the concent of the patient is crucial, and that involuntary euthanasia is ruled right out of the court. Yet consider the proposed development in the light of the current situation. On the one hand, assisted suicide, where a person such as your relative helps you to die, is currently illegal, and there is no suggestion that it be made otherwise. On the other hand, doctors killing certain categories of patients without their concent, such as the senile or the comatose, by withholding treatment, is a regular occurrence. Is the legalization of euthanasia more likely to be a development out of the former or the latter of these two policies? In conclusion, I believe that euthanasia should be legal if a person is on life support and will be for the rest of their life, and also if they are suffering. I do not believe that euthanasia should be used as a means of assisted suicide, also known as active euthanasia.

Amazon.com Marketing essays I have selected to evaluate the marketing strategies of Amazon.com. Amazon.com is probably the most widely known of the dot com companies in the world today. They started as primarily an on-line bookstore, but they have greatly expanded their product offerings. They appear now to be attempting to position themselves as the one-stop shopping haven of the Internet. Today, Amazon.com is the place to find and discover anything you want to buy online....We have Earth's Biggest SelectionTM of products, including free electronic greeting cards, online auctions, and millions of books, CDs, videos, DVDs, toys and games, and electronics. (About Amazon.com, amazon.com). They are appealing to potentially all market segments. So, the first question I will attempt to answer in this paper is how Amazon will reach all those potential markets, get them to their website, get them to purchase, and get them to come back. The next question I will answer is how Amazons approach differs from a standard s tores approach. The Internet is transforming the way consumers and companies find each other. The Internet provides instant access for consumers to companies information and products. This gives companies a great opportunity to reach millions of people at a very low cost. The Internet makes it possible for [a] sponsor to select any of millions of messages and to simultaneously narrowcast any of them to millions of different individuals. Beowulf Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Beowulf - Essay Example The hall was the place where his warriors had fun while drinking mead. In the same hall, the king gave his warriors treasures after every battle. The hall was a center for listening to music and singing songs which theme was bravery and the heroic adventures that brave people get through. Therefore, the hall was a good place to experience all the joys. However, a monster that lived in the nearby started attacks in the hall built by the king. Grendel was the name of the monster and he was extremely brutal in his actions. According to Heaney, once at night Grendel went to the hall and attacked the people who were there. Now all the warriors in the hall were asleep at the time of the attack. The monster butchered around thirty of the men who were in the hall. King Hrothgar was overwhelmed because of the pain and sorrow of losing his people. Scyldings had the same experience as their king. However, it was hard to do anything at that time to overcome the situation that had just occurred. The following night, the monster came back to the hall again and killed again. Despite the efforts that the Scyldings applied to overcome the monster, nothing worked and they did not achieve their objective. The monster was resistant to the weapons used to harm it. None of the weapons harmed Grendel. He was too strong and resistant to be defeated. Scyldings thought of seeking help from gods but the monster remained strong and undefeatable. The monster continued its attacks in the hall and harming all those in the hall. Warriors tried to defend the others but they ended up being slayed. It reached a point that Scyldings started avoiding fighting and at the end, they started abandoning the hall every now and then. However, Grendel continued expanding attacks from the hall to the areas around the hall by causing terrors to the Danes for about twelve years. Stories told about what was happening in the kingdom of Hrothgar spread like fire in the bush. The news about the horrifying creatu re in Hrothgar’s kingdom reached Southwest Sweden that was the Geats’ Kingdom. (Heaney 18). When Beowulf heard the news, concerning Hrothgars’s Kingdom and the dilemma that the king of the kingdom had, Bewoulf remembered that King Hrothgar was a good person to his father because he did a favor for him once. Beowulf felt that he had a debt to either pay to the king of Danes through finding a solution to the dilemma that the king had or take the challenge to get rid of Grendel. He decided to take challenge and fight against the monster. He planned a journey to Denmark for fighting Grendel. No one could stop Beowulf or prevent him from going to Denmark to accomplish his endeavor of helping King Hrothgar overcome the monster (Collins 200). Beowulf was a young man by then but determined to win over the monster. He searched for fourteen warriors who he regarded them as worthy to accompany him. They assembled and started their journey to Denmark by sailing. When they a rrived at the magnificent hall, they made a petition to meet King Hrothgar. Inside the hall, Beowulf made a request in a speech that he wanted an honor to fight against the horrifying and terrifying monster, Grendel. He promised that he was willing to fight the monster using his bear hands without using any weapon or a shield. Honoring of the request was in form of a feast by the king. Smartlipo laser liposuction technique explained to prospective Essay

Smartlipo laser liposuction technique explained to prospective patients - Essay Example rtlipo makes use of the tumescent technique, where highly diluted lidocaine and epinephrine are injected into the target fat tissues, so that they swell and become tumescent (meaning firm). Lidocaine is a local anesthetic while epinephrine helps in minimising blood loss. Then, the fat cells are broken down by using calibrated lasers and the fluid formed is easily suctioned off through a cannula, about 1-2mm wide. The traditional methods require the patient to be put under general anesthesia, causing much discomfort. Hospitalization is required, followed by weeks of slow recovery. Besides, surgical blood loss and bruising is higher. Smartlipo requires a very small incision in the skin for inserting the cannula, hence can be performed under local anesthesia. One doesn’t feel any pain during the procedure, and only a little pain after the anesthesia wears off, which can be easily taken care of with minor pain medications. Most patients need just one session of about 45 minutes to one hour for treating one body area. Recovery period is also very less compared to traditional methods. Many people return to work within two hours of the procedure, while some like to rest for a few days. Results can be seen immediately, with continued improvement over a period of three months. From then on, the skin looks completely normal, with hard to spot scars. The fat removed by Smartlipo doesn’t grow back in the treated areas in adults, eliminating the problem of regaining fat after losing it. Besides, the laser technology helps firm up the skin from under which fat removal has been done, thereby preventing ungainly sagging, so commonly seen in traditional liposuction methods. A Smartlipo session is followed by a doctor’s checkup and instructions. It is essential to follow the instructions strictly. One must take pain medications as directed and also use the compression bandages to prevent blood clotting and ensure quick healing. No other medicines like anti-inflammatory

Colonial Differences from North to South Essay Example for Free

Colonial Differences from North to South Essay During the 1700’s, many colonies began to show their true differences with one another. Although the colonies were settled by English origin only, the regions became two distinct societies within years. Of the colonies, the Chesapeake and the New England region were strongly diverse. The Chesapeake and the New England regions differed in the 1700’s because of religious debates that had occurred, different motives that were placed when going to the New World, and the different economies that had developed within the colonies. First, religious debates became a huge distinguishing factor in the two regions. During the 1700’s, Maryland was considered to be a Catholic Haven in the Chesapeake region. Founded by Lord Baltimore in 1634, Maryland quickly became the rescue place for Catholic-English men and women whom faced execution from Protestant England. Faced with death, the Catholics of Maryland stood behind the Act of Toleration that was passed in 1649. In John Winthrop’s document, â€Å"A model of Christian Charity†, he describes how each man needs to come together for religion. God Almighty in his most holy and wise providence hath so disposed of the condition of mankind†¦ we must knot together in this work as one man. †(Document A). In Maryland’s Act of Toleration, the statute guaranteed all toleration to Christians. With the act, Maryland could be Catholic without a word being said. Unlike Maryland, The New England region had nothing to hide with religion. New England was mainly Puritan, spanning out of Calvinism. Predestination and â€Å"visible saints† were just two of many popular phrases used in the Puritan religion. Puritans believed in being predestined for heaven or hell when a said person was born. Also, Puritans had the decision to be Separatists and Non-Separatists. Many Puritans were Non-Separatists, meaning they wanted to reform the Church of England but not completely break away from it. Along with Non-Separatists, Separatists were also common. Separatists were groups of people that wanted to completely break away from the Church of England. One of the most famous groups of Separatists was the Pilgrims. In the end, the colonies were very different religion and the differences in religion molded America’s freedom of religion. Next, another factor that made the two regions different, were the motives that were placed going to the olonies. In the Chesapeake region, the Virginia Company was immediately put in place when they had arrived in Virginia. The Virginia Company was a joint stock company that had one motive in America; gold. After the defeat of the Spanish Armada, England was craving for outside profit and America was the answer. In John Smith’s document about Virginia, he describes what life was like revolving around gold. â€Å"There was no talk, but dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold. † (Document F). Although the gold process was almost a complete disaster within Jamestown, the colony became the first permanent settlement. But, in the New England region, the English men and women were migrating to the New World for completely different reasons. First, the Separatists of England that were living in Holland to avoid royal English rule, departed to America. The Separatists, later known as Pilgrims, set off on the Mayflower. The original plan was to land off of the coast of Virginia. However, the Mayflower eventually made land fall in the New England region. Living off the land and poor, the Pilgrims became friends with local Native Americans and later, made their own government and set the foundation for the New England colony. After the Massachusetts Bay colony was formed, the main motive of the colony was to build it full of life and families. As quoted in the â€Å"Articles of Agreement†, â€Å"2. We intend that our town shall be composed of forty families, rich and poor. † (Document D). Known as the â€Å"Great Migration†, around twenty thousand Puritans migrated to the New England region from England. John Porter created a large list of Emigrants that were bound for New England. A family decided to migrate and John Porter recorded it: â€Å"1. Joseph Hull, of Somerset, a minister, aged 40 years old. 2. Agnes Hull, his wife, aged 25 years. . Joan Hull, his daughter, aged 15 years old. Etc. † (Document B). Many young families migrated from England to receive freedom of religion and break away from the clutches of royal England. Between gold, religious freedom and the â€Å"Great Migration†, the New England and Chesapeake had many different reasons for migrating to the New World. Lastly, the two regions became two separate worlds when economies began to develop. The Chesapeake region was known for one thing, and that was tobacco. Tobacco was vital to the colony’s economic foundations. A rich man’s crop, tobacco was very labor-demanding. When indentured servants rebelled, African slaves were put to use and the Chesapeake became home to slaves. As well as labor, tobacco sparked plantations and the need for land. When slaves were imported, this became the splitting factor between the north and south. However, New England, with its’ cooler falls and winters, could never plant tobacco, especially with the historic New England â€Å"stony† soil. The â€Å"stony† soil prevented any farmers from successfully planting a lot of plants. New England’s economy thrived on shipbuilding, fishing, commerce and trading. The region also contained dense forests, helping the shipbuilding industry skyrocket. Also, the economy was very organized and everything affected it. In the document of â€Å"Wage and Price Regulations in Connecticut†, they discuss the prices and wages being regulated so that the people of the colony can understand their religious callings. â€Å".. in the interim recommends that all tradesmen and laborers consider the religious end of their callings which is that receiving such moderate profit as may enable them to serve God and their neighbors with their arts and trades comfortably.. †. (Document E). In the New England colony, everything was interconnected, including religion, economy and politics. The Chesapeake’s hot, humid weather enabled the farms to grow tobacco to form their economy. But, New England’s cooler weather enabled their workers to focus on shipbuilding, trading, and even religion. In conclusion, the two regions faced many differences within their cultures when compared. Their religions, motives, and economies were a few of the distinguishing factors. As the colonies prospered in their own individual ways, the differences grew larger and became two different societies.

Essay on Taming of the Shrew: Petrucio’s Desire for Katherine :: Taming Shrew Essays

The Taming of the Shrew: Petrucio’s Desire for Katherine  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      In the play The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, Petrucio recognizes, respects and desires Katherine’s strength of character.   Petrucio is a clever man who sees beyond facades because he uses them himself.   (II, i 46) (II, I 283 - 89)   He is stimulated by Katherine’s sharp tongue and harsh actions.   He proves this many times throughout the play. Petrucio is not in desperate need of money, but comes to Padua to find a rich wife.   He says â€Å"To wive and thrive as best I may,† when he is telling Hortensio why he came to Padua.   He means that he has come to find a wife and get richer.   From Petrucios response to his friend Hortensio (I,ii 64 - 75), it might be said that Petrucio came to Padua to make himself richer by marriage no matter how wretched the woman.   I don’t believe this is true.   He also tells Hortensio that his father has died and that he is out in the world to gain experiences he cannot at home, and to find a wife secondary.   (I,ii 49 - 57)   Petrucio enjoys verbal sport and a non-conventional sense of humor.   Petrucio surrounds himself with neither tame nor conforming people.   You can even see this in his servants.   His servants like him very much and enjoy his entertainments.   An example of this is when Petrucio and his servant man Grumio get into a disagreement about knocking on the gate.   Reflective of this is Petrucio’s methods to â€Å"woo† Katherine.   His methods are game like and outrageous.   Such as when he beats up Grumio because Kate’s horse stumbles, or showing up late to the wedding.   While showing Katherine how ridiculous she is about things, he is also making her feel special, which is something she never felt in life.  Ã‚  Ã‚   He also says that â€Å"This is the way to kill a wife with kindness.†Ã‚   (IV,i 211)   This is his courting method of when he makes the wife feel to good for everything surrounding her. When they eat dinner once he complains à ¢â‚¬Å"Endanger choler planteth anger†¦. since of ourselves are choleric†.   (IV, I 177) While Petrucio may not agree with what society has determined to be   proper, he is aware of the importance to conform.   He knows the ways of society and that he must demonstrate this to Katherine, who has no regard for public presentation.

Reflection of Five Minds for the Future

Reflection of Five Minds for the Future The concepts and arguments about Gardner’s five minds enriched me a lot, and made me think further about the capabilities and skills people should equipped with to handle the new world in the future individually and cooperatively. As a master student, I feel that subjects in commerce will cultivate my cognition and interpersonal skills by developing disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful, and ethical minds. In a few years time, when I become a business professional, I think those minds are still important to me in order to make bigger achievements. Disciplined mind Disciplined mind means a continuous process of improving one’s skills. No matter what knowledge I have captured now, there are still many unknown areas for me to explore. However, in retrospect, I always thought what I have been told was exactly what I need to learn. And now I figure out that learning is not merely receiving, but is the continuous process of sel f-education, self-discovery and self-reflection.The subjects in commerce provide opportunities for me to do further research, to find out the solutions to the issues and get feedback from myself and others, which cultivates my habit of investigating the ideas in the long run. Synthesizing mind Gardner (2008, p3) defined that synthesizing mind is a process of collecting, evaluating and combining distinguished information. As a student, during in-class discussions and exams, I have been given many chances to perfect my synthesizing mind. When preparing exams, I will synthesize all the information, ideas, and feelings from separate lectures and combine them to one mind map, demonstrating their inter-relationships. After doing like that, I will have further understandings of the subjects and could put those abstract theories into practice. The group project also encourages me to absorb different views when looking at one problem, and then integrate all together into one idea, which becom e the main research direction. For an informed business professional, a synthesizing mind is necessary for them to make the most appropriate decision.Arming with synthesizing mind, they attempt to consider all the horizontal and vertical information before making final decision. Horizontal information means new ideas from other colleagues and knowledge gain from other domains, and vertical information includes the lessons learnt from their past experiences, knowledge about their current circumstances and also new dilemmas they may meet in the coming situations. Moreover, the capability of generating well-informed strategies will lead business professional to higher level in their career, such as manager or leader level.Creating mind As argued by Gardner (2008, p3), individuals need to think creatively to break new world, or we will be left behind by the overwhelming development of technology. I cannot agree more to his argument because the situations where some people have been â₠¬Å"controlled† by computers and internets have arisen. For example, individuals nowadays become more dependent on the ideas and information provided on the internet, which lead them to think superficially and conservatively. The education method of MCom overcomes the drawbacks of traditional teaching process in terms of encouraging students to think out of the box and to look at one problem from different viewpoints. Creativity is not always welcomed, especially in the domains stated by Gardner (2008, p7), such as accounting, law and engineering. Taking accounting as an example, lots of accounting policies have been used for years and have been a stereotype to all the firms. Major innovation of the accounting policy will rarely happen; however, minor changes will easily occur. It is necessary for them to adapt to the small changes and make suitable decision based on the updated policy rather than follow the old ways blindly. Respectful and ethical mind Living under the multicult ural environment, individuals are supposed to appreciate others’ culture, understand and pardon others’ behavior and build common trust. And we citizens shall do whatever a responsible person will do in our role, standing in our view. As a master student here, I may have some pportunities to work with people from different nations. If I want to be respected by others, I need to welcome and understand them and show my respect sincerely. A respectful mind is vital for a business professional in dealing with relationships between colleagues, customers and friends. When facing a problem, the person who refuses to listen to others’ opinions but insist on his or her own thought will make the problem more complex and finally poison the workplace, and no one are likely to work with this kind of person any more.As the world becoming globalized, people who can appreciate different arguments, cultures and behaviors will adjust themselves well to the new world. In order to enjoy decent life in the new world, businessmen should not act selfishly, rather, they are supposed to have ethical mind, thinking in a way of making win-win decisions to benefit our society as well as their business. Should Abortion Be Legalized Essay - 1068 Words

The topic that I chose for my argumentative essay is about the topic of abortion. Abortion has been a controversial topic for a very long time. The dictionary definition of abortion is â€Å"A medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus†(Merriam-Webster). Many people believe that this procedure is wrong and immoral. These people, who are categorized as â€Å"pro-lifers†, often times forget that by making abortion illegal does not mean that abortion will be stopped. In fact by making abortion illegal you will cause the number of unsafe abortions to go up which can cause a much higher mortality rate in women seeking an abortion. This makes the term â€Å"pro-life† somewhat ironic because of the future implications of their†¦show more content†¦Not only would she have no money, but she would also lose the chance to go to school and get an education. By having an abortion she would not have to deal with all of the issues like t hese, though she would have to deal with the emotional aspect of deciding to terminate the fetus which would be a decision that should be left to that person, not a law. She would hopefully learn from her mistake and use this experience to affect her more positively than negatively. Another reason for keeping abortion a legal procedure is that religious ideology is no foundation for any law. Many people who are â€Å"pro-life† are so because of their religious ideology. By creating laws based on religious ideology we begin to break down the barriers between the separation of church and state. Instead of the law protecting all people now, it will only protect those whose moral compass is the same as the morals within a certain religion. Unfortunately, not everyone is religious and abides by the same morals. Just because you believe something should be a certain way does not mean it should apply to everyone around you, because they may be in a different situation that you are. Forcing your personal beliefs on to an individual is wrong. People have the ability to decide by if they would like to carry out a pregnancy or not. The beliefs of others should not be the fulcrum for her decision, but rather her own beliefs.
